Hey 512! Make Room for Two

With an average 300 days of sunshine a year, miles of hike and bike trails, gorgeous lakes, events, festivals and a booming economy, it's no wonder that people are moving into Austin in record numbers. The population has increased so much so that the 512 area code that has handled Austin for over 60 years now has to make room for a brand new partner.

More people not only means more buildings and traffic, but also more digits. The ubiquitous 512 will soon be joined by 737 in July 2013. But don't panic just yet. Existing phone users who have 512 numbers will get to keep the 512 code. New landlines and new cell phone customers will get the 737 digits.

There will be a a public meeting where you can add your input on this change. It will be May 17 at 9:30 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room on the 7th floor at 1701 N. Congress Avenue.
